More about this scene

This photograph shows the part of the Jubilee Exhibition of 1887 that was situated between Talbot Road and the railway. Originally, the plans of 1886 had been to extend to Trafford Bar, but speculators had bought that land and were asking too much for it, so the exhibition moved sideways over Talbot Road. The Machinery in Motion section was here, plus a recreation ground where the Manchester Athletic Club organised running and cycling races. To the left, the building with two flags on top was a working dairy, the Manchester Creamery, and cows were taken in the morning and at teatime from fields off Seymour Grove to be hand milked for the public to watch.

Way back in the late 50's/60's I visited the art gallery- so interesting.
Does anyone remember Mountfield Street, later called Milton Street? I lived at number 37 with my mam (Veronica), dad (Jim) and my sisters, Vera and Mary. We went to St Bridget's School. The three of us used to go and play in Phillips Park during the holidays, you could go anywhere in those days and feel safe. How times have changed!
