More about this scene
In 1740 Mevagissey ranked fourth among the Cornish pilchard ports, which between them had built up a lucrative trade exporting millions of pilchards each year to places like Italy. Around the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, the majority of large fishing boats at Mevagissey had originated from elsewhere in Cornwall, mainly from the west.
