Chinbrook Estate

A Memory of Mottingham.

I moved to the Chinbrook Estate in 1965 when I was 10 years old. When I was older I spent many an evening in the Chinbrook Public House, I can remember seeing Acker Bilk play there.
As children we used to go to the Tarn, Mottingham Playing Fields & Chinbrook Meadows. We always found something to amuse ourselves.
I remember The Express Dairy in Mottingham Village, the cycle shop, Phillip and Dear.
I used to buy my old 45's in Phillip and Dear which I still have today. I remember asking my mother if she could get me Daydream Believer by the Monkees, my favourite group at the time.
She told me there were some young girls in the shop when she asked the assistant if they had the record, she said they started giggling, obviously they thought the record was for her.

Hi, found this post about Chinbrook Estate, purely at random.
Sitting at home bored on a friday night in Melbourne Australia.
I moved to Chinbrook Estate from Rotherhite in 1966 and lived at 4 Aldersgrove Avenue. I remember all of the places you mentioned in Mottingham Village and I remember when singles went up to 5 bob in the record shop. I'm Steve Walters, I must know you ? Funny how you forget things, do you remember Luxfords in Mottingham Village? I have so many funny stories about growing up on the estate, love to share them with everybody one day.
I lived on Chinbrook and still do, I was younger than you Steve but remember you, Im John Hummerston I lived opposite Eddie Brown, on the green in lambscroft, I knew your sister, The Farmers,
Martin Bland, Tony Crow (who i still see) Hope things are good for you over there.
Came across these comments about Chinbrook Estate by accident. I came to the estate in 1966. Left in 1988 and came back in 2000. Steve Walters. Did your mum live in Merryfield House? I remember the name John Humberston and my sister was friends with Joanne Farmer. It all brings back such good memories. Good times
Meant to say I'm Sandra strudwick
I think I may remember you Steve Walters. Your surname rings a bell. Did you have a brother? I lived in Stofield Gardens. My name is Janice Taylor. Lived next door to the Modells, Martin Bland also rings a bell and "yes" I do remember Luxfords. I can still remember Mr Luxford.
I'm here in Brisbane, Australia looking up the area where I grew up. I moved to 12 Mirror Path when I was 6 months old in 1971. My mum stayed at that house until about 2007. My name then was Samantha Howard. I have a brother, Stephen Howard. I went to Marvels Lane infants when Miss Lloyd was headmistress. My teacher was Mrs Carter. In the junior school, the headmaster was David Freott.

I knew the Dann family (Rafe, Sadie and Charlotte), the Hathaways lived in front of me and I remember the names Andrew Ledger, Billy and Hetty Hudd.
Sorry, I didn't finish. I also knew Jimmy Murrell and Graham who lived at 2 Mirror Path. Do you remember Grove Park Hospital and it's history? A workhouse, a TB hospital and then a hospital for "mental" patients as it was called then. I always found the place very scary.
I lived in Lambscroft Ave from 1965 to 1988 and remember the shops and places mentioned well. I have to admit that the only name that rings a bell is Janice Taylor. I remember them digging the large hole in 1980 to try and stop the flooding!
The Mr Luxford you have mentioned was my father who used to like a pint in the chinbrook pub and the porcupine pub in Mottingham village. I lived in Marvels Lane and went to Marvels Lane school. I used to work in the paper shop shop in the village .Do you remember the park in Masewood Road. It had a paddling pool and swings etc ? I also used take my children to Fairy Hill Park near Mottingham Station next to the tarn. I am 82 years old now and have lived in Larkfield Kent for the last 51 years so don't go back very often as all my family have died now but have fond memories .
