Mytchett Green

A Memory of Mytchett.

I was born in Mytchett and went to the junior school on the Mytchett road towards ash vale, between 1955 and 1961, then R.H secondary until 1966.
I lived in Loman rd, and remember when the overflow estate was built for families from London, it became a good place to play with friends, not very safe when i think back, but you don't think about that sort of thing when you are 11 years old. my best friend moved onto that estate, John Walker.
In fact there were many of the local kids that went of adventures over the woods and lake in Mytchett,
In the early 60s no one was bothered about what would happen if their kids were out most of the day
"how times have changed" some of my friends, Chris, Lesley his brother Bill, Roger,Steve.and a couple of others i can't remember their names, were always building camps up trees or mucking about doing all the things that kids do, we always went home for lunch and back out straight away after.
when your parents asked, what did you get up to, the answer was the standard "not much"
My school memories were good, Mr Gilson head master ruled with the cane, so you tried your best to avoid being sat outside his office after assembly.
My form teacher was a friendly man, unlike mr Beal the PE teacher, who had the boys cross country running as often as he could, Mytchett woods did not hold the same appeal as when we played there !
When it came time to leave my school years i had to get a job, so one day on the way home from school i decided to try a local electronics company, a company called Dynamco, who were half way between my school and our house, anyway turning up in my school uniform i knocked on their door and asked "any jobs going" Yes replied the personnel officer. So began my lifetime employment in Electronics, now at 65 i have just retired and wished that that door had a racing car company behind it.
