More about this scene

This picture, taken from the walkway of the bridge, gives us a panoramic view of the Alexandra Docks and the residential area of Pillgwenly. The photographer was evidently a person of some courage—he was 242 feet above ground level. The span of the bridge is 645 feet, and the total cost was £98,000. It opened in 1906, transporting vehicles and pedestrians across the River Usk by means of a cradle, thus preventing any obstruction to water-borne traffic.

I remember walking over the top of the bridge with my father in the summer of 1953; a sunny day with a light wind... whenever in Newport alway remember this walk.
