Caption for Northampton, Market Square C1950: Much of this corner of the Market Place has changed since this photograph was taken. The newspaper office on the left and the road running to the right of it have gone; in their place is a modern shopping complex. The Midland Railway Hotel on the right is also a shopping centre - Peacock Place. Three doors up is a building with a bay window on the first floor. A solicitor's office since 1949, this was once a locally famous music school.

Memories of Northampton


I remember my mum Betty working in Lynn's Cafe on the Mounts. Mark and Lynn were the owners and I used to go there after school and spent many happy times in their home which was above (and below) the cafe. There was one couple who I used to nickname 'Sammy sixpence' as he always used to give me sixpence when he saw me. Anyone frequented Lynn's cafe, love to hear from you.

One of Northampton’s now-lost buildings is seen on the right of this photograph, the old Notre Dame High School which was built in 1871 as a school and convent run by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.
