Brook St. School

A Memory of Northumberland Heath.

I am Peter Harris , now 72, attended the school from 1950-58. we lived at 80 Birling Rd off Colliers lane. My siste Jean worked in Walkers newsagents on Bexley Rd, and married John Smith who with his brothers had the carpet shop near the post office. My older brother Ray, was manager at the other walkers newsagents on the estate above Stuart Mantle way. He started working for Mr Walker in the old converted bus that was parked on the green in the early 1950s. I too recall the teachers under Mr Pardy and played in the school under 15s rugby team from 53-58. Love to hear from anyone of that era. Cannot recall many names, only Mike Taylor who lived at the top of Avenue Road, and a Micheal Cowan. Next door to us in Birling Road was a family called Webber. Anyone remember us or them . Love to hear any memories from this area.

Hi. Kathleen. Thank you for posting your comments and reply to mine. We no doubt have similar memories of Erith and Barnhurst etc. I played in the woods at Barnhurst, my brother in law John Smith had the carpet shop n the parade, as well as the one on Northumberland Heath. Like you, I walked down Brook street every day to school, brought sweets from the little shop next to Junior school. What great childhood memories. Unlike you, although returning to a the area to visit my sister, who has now moved to Margate. I have never returned to Erith having heard what has happened there. Hope you are happy in Cornwall, we are having a holiday there in July. Sorry to hear abou the loss of your dad, we never get used to loosing our loved ones, we were never designed to get old and die. Wish you all the best, hope to hear further from you. Cheer🍷Peter.
There is now a new facebook Group about the school. It might be a little later but could still interest you.
