This famous and quite steep incline leads southwards to Nunthorpe and Guisborough. It now carries considerably more traffic, and speeds are closely monitored by the police; it is dominated by large estates built in the fields visible on the left. The motor cycle with sidecar (centre) is now a rare sight.

I was born on the 06/08/1947, a home birth in the same bed as my great grandfather died in. His name was John Thomas Hare. My mother was Betty Hare and my father was Arther Buttle. My mother's father was David Hare who owned and ran Spencer Beck Farm, Normanby Road, Ormesby. London born, married a Yorkshire Rose, bought a house, semi-detached, corner of Cargo Fleet Lane/Bournemouth Avenue. 2 children born there (so they could play for Yorkshire, so my wife Margaret says). I attended the local school at the bottom of Gisbrough Bank - I have several school photographs of myself and classmates. I had a fight with a school friend as to whose turn it was to serve the school dinner that day. This was sorted by a teacher who said - You do it today - to my school friend and to me - You do it tomorrow. My tomorrow never came.
