I was a cadet nurse at Orsett in the early 70's and then a pupil nurse for a short while as I left to have a baby. I have great memories of life in the Nurses home with all the other girls and of course the house warden good old Gerti. My great grandfather Harry Sach was the village policeman. My father Colin Suckamore was born in the police house. My maternal grandparents Winnifred and Samuel Kingwell lived in Ridgwell Avenue with their children Dorothy, Kathleen, Muriel and John. I remember visiting Peggy’s sweet shop, Pigs the general store and the butchers. I live in London now but often return.
I remember Malcolm Cuthbert as We are the same age. He has two sisters I believe one called Valerie! Orsett was a lovely village then with one village policeman a nice butcher and Piggs the grocers. Mr. Smith was the blacksmith Orsett Hospital still had a lot of its original buildings then. There are a lot of beautiful walks around the area. In the early 1960's I worked as pre-nursing cadet and then a trainee nurse. I passed my exams in the end of 1967 and started as a registered nurse from 1968. The photo above was the first section of the new hospital - the out patient block. I remember working in this building at the begining of my time there. We still worked in the old workhouse buildings through to the end of my training. I moved away when I ...see more
