On the right of the picture is the town war memorial; to the left is the striking grey stone facade of the Talbot Hotel, a gabled 17th-century building. Inside is a splendid Jacobean oak staircase; according to some sources, it comes from nearby Fotheringhay Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded in 1587.
