I fondly remember "Barrowell Green swimming pool. After the war it was on weekly visit. Now hears a thing opposite the pool was a old derelict house who lived there? and what happened to the house?

My grandmother, Phyllis Dearden, ran the ABC restaurant for many years. I would go and visit her with my mother when I was quite small and then, when I was a teenager, I helped her during school holidays by making sandwiches at a sandwich bar inside the shop to the right of the front door. I remember the big round plastic tomatoes containing tomato sauce. The green plastic leaves on top could be unscrewed to put the tomato sauce in.

Special treat of afternoon tea at Pritchards, next door to Evans and Davies. Served by waitresses in smart black dresses with white aprons and little frilly hats. Lovely tiered plates of sandwiches and cakes. Palm Court Restaurant, upstairs on the opposite side of the road near Cinema. The smell of freshly ground coffee from the Home and Colonial grocers at top of the High Street. The ...see more
