More about this scene

The charming village of Penshurst lies in a valley at the junction of the River Eden and the Medway; it is renowned for the stately mansion of Penshurst Place, the home of the Sidney family since the reign of Edward VI. The church of St John the Baptist, originally built between the 13th and 15th centuries, has a late Perpendicular tower, glimpsed through the trees here, and its interior, largely remodelled by Sir Gilbert Scott in 1864-5, contains a number of the Sidney family tombs and memorials.
