More about this scene

The last view in this chapter and in the book looks from the large village green across the pond to housing typical of the development of Pirbright. The green was heathland, and the village basically dates from the mid 19th century, although there are a few older buildings, such as the Cricketers pub at the far left. Little has changed here. Many cottages carry plaques with the 'P' of Lord Pirbright, the village developer and estate owner. The trees, the bench and the post office remain.

Pirbright Scrambles.
I am interested in contacting other people who remember scrambling in Purbright in the 1950`s. I have many photos of riders and would welcome any information that other readers have. Edwin Moody.

Boxing Day Scramble
I was brought up in Pirbright Village and my father was into motorbikes. My brother was older than me and had a motorcycle 1st but when I was old enough I also got a motorcycle. For many years as a family we went to Fox Hills on Boxing Day to watch the big boxing day scramble (now known as motocross). We usually took soup in a flask and bread with us. My Childhood Memories...
My name is Dawn Thompson, I grew up in one of the Cottages next to the Pub (no 3). My father Peter Thompson, worked there for many years. Bakers Gate And Pirbright Village
I was born at Bakers Gate, (which is oppsite the "research station), in 1939. I moved away in 1959. My parents continued there until they retired and went to live at 3, The Terrace in the village. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
