Port Isaac made front page news in 1999 when local farmer Robert Sloman's Landrover went out of control on the steep hill behind the village. The occupants jumped to safety, but the Landrover buried itself in the roof of a house below; from there it had to be removed piecemeal, as the site was too inaccessible to use a crane.
