More about this scene
The Market Place at Ripon is still the scene of the daily 'Setting the Watch' ceremony, when the city Wakeman blows his ancient horn at 9pm to announce that the city is now in his care. The custom is thought to date back for over 1,000 years, and is a reminder of the city's medieval foundation.
