More about this scene
Stonemasons and glaziers from France and Italy built St Wilfrid's first stone church on this site in 672. Reconstruction began in 1069, although the building we see today dates from 1180. The west front was added in 1220. The minster finally became a cathedral in 1836. Hidden in the crypt are the remains of the original St Wilfrid's church.
