More about this scene
Rothesay is in an ideal location in the sheltered 'sweet Rothesay Bay', to quote the popular song. It is the county town on the eastern side of the Island of Bute. The pier has changed little from how it appears in this photograph: in the holiday period it is still as busy as it was a century ago. The main sailing destinations from Rothesay are to Wemyss Bay on the Ayrshire coast and, in the summer season, to the Island of Arran.
