More about this scene
The Town Hall, with its imitation Palladian style façade, was built on the site of the old Elborow School and Almshouses endowed by Richard Elborow in the 17th century. In 1900 the civic facility was moved to the Benn Buildings on the other side of the High Street (now Marks & Spencer); Rugby's first cinema (Leon Vint's Picture Palace) opened on the old site with an enlarged and extended first floor. Later known as the Rugby Palace Cinema, it was further extended in 1919. Damaged by fire in 1921, the site was taken over by Woolworth's, who replaced it in the 1950s with an ugly, featureless slab. Only the 1919 extension survives.
