A Memory of Salford.
My husband did an apprenticeship at Salford Electrical Instruments. He worked there when they moved to Barton Lane in Eccles.

Early morning. My husband aged 22 was coming home to Partington from work at the Irlam steel works. He arrived at Bob's Ferry. Bernard came over on the boat and took him and a few other men into the boat saying, "This is the last one I'm doing today." The smell was overpowering, a strong petrol smell with a mist of fumes over the Manchester ship canal water. When my husband arrived home he glanced out of the front upstairs window and saw the enormous plume of black smoke in the distance. He woke me and together we stared at it wondering what it was. We found out later about the ferry fire disaster and loss of life, the party of men burned and dead, one a nearby neighbour lad, was the party directly after my husband crossed. We heard they had set off in the boat and were overcome, Brave Bernard went out to rescue them with the tragic ensuing consequences.
Anne.
