This very substantial bargate stone building - five storeys and a basement - was originally a
private house, but became a prep school known as Silvesters, the headmaster's name.
Lloyds bank has gone, and its premises are now called Bargate House, and
the tall lime tree in the garden of Vine Court (left of centre) is no more.

In the late 1700s,
Bass (after whom the Bass Strait is named)
