The Lock from Downstream 1890 Downstream, you reach the market town of Abingdon, once noted for its important medieval abbey, dissolved in 1538.
Similarly, the cottages on the Market Square have gone. Seckerson, the hairdresser's, has become 'Maison Seckerson, Hair Stylist'.

The market is dominated by the castle (centre right), which was built by Henry II between 1165 and 1173. The scaffolding shows that it is under repair by the Ministry of Works.
The jam-packed stalls of Hitchin market reflect the higgledy-piggledy dwellings that it replaced.
The stump of the old 13th-century market cross dominates this scene. In the background is the church tower, unusual architecturally for this part of Britain.
Note that Smith Bradbeers has moved to this corner, from Market Street (see page 25). Note also the roofline, with chimneys and upper rooms above the shops in the centre.
