On his return from his circumnavigation in 1580, Drake anchored in the lee of the island while he sent messen- gers ashore to check if Queen Elizabeth was still alive and, if so, whether he was still in favour. He managed to ensure the latter by sending several tons of stolen Spanish gold to London.
