More about this scene

Turning south, the tour reaches South Petherton, a small market town in the Lias limestone foothills. Its graceful parish church, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, is dominated, as is the town, by its octagonal crossing tower. Most houses are two-storey, and the archway on the left leads into St James Mews, a shopping centre. The cupola in the distance belongs to Blake Hall, part 18th-century but mostly of 1911.

My Mother Joyce Ladbury was evacuated to South Petherton at the beginning of WW2 aged 9 years. She stayed with a few families but most of all loved the Gaylard family. Mrs Gaylard and twin daughters Gwen and Cis ( or Sis) not sure of spelling. My Mum loved going out with the adult daughters to deliver the mail as I think that one was the Post Mistress or had a responsibility for the Mail during the war. ...see more
My 3rd great grandfather, Francis Theophilus Robins, lived in South Petherton and was a lawyer in Yeovil. He married, I think an Elizabeth Upton. They had at least two children, my 2nd great grandfather George and a daughter Frances who married a Burridge. George was born in 1816 in S. Petherton and also became a lawyer and lived in Herts. The names of his parents were combined to become Upton Robins. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who has information about the family.
My family were evacuated during the second world war from East London , they were put into some cottages in the village, my mum died in 2002 and her sisters have died since then, apart from one who is in her eighties. I can remember growing up with them talking about such wonderful memories they had during evacuation in South Petherton. Unfortunately the shop they owned in London was blitzed during the war and ...see more
