I remember Ye Olde Cherry Tree inn and having a Babycham in the 50's. We really thought that was living! The pub was always buzzing and was a great place to meet up with friends on a Saturday night.
I was born in Winchmore Hill in 1937 and from a very young age lived with my parents and younger sister Carole in Wynchgate, backing onto to the lovely Grovelands Park. When I got married in 1957 our reception for 80 friends and relatives for a sit down meal was held at Ye Olde Cherry Tree, and I remember it all went very well My father kept the receipt for this, which I still have in my possession.
The Cherry Tree was my main watering hole as I had so many friends in the area. Stan Chrees from Oakleigh Road, Bernard Downes, Edwin Hodson, to name but a few. Oh the days before mindless fruit machines, when pubs were for drinking and making friends. The beer was good, but the Old Forge restaurant was superb.
