Memories Of Brentford 1950 1970

A Memory of St Austell.

My name is Sandra Palmer [nee Ricks] and I lived in 23 Harnage Road until it was demolished for redevelopment. Lived there with my parents, Florrie and Len, sister Yvonne and my nan Ada Davis.
I went to St. George's School and remember many of my teachers - Miss Masters in the nursery,Mrs Richardson [who I thought was posh because she drank coffee] , Mrs Reed, Miss Davis and Mr Church who was also the headmaster. Mr. Church was always going out of class to answer the phone. I remember that we had gas lights, coal stoves in the corner of the classroom and a wind-up gramophone for country dancing - and this was the late 50's!!

Our neighbours were the Burwoods and the Collins; although everyone in the street knew everyone and were friendly. I remember the corner chip shop, the veg shop and The Pottery Arms. I also remember Drapers store with open boxes of biscuits and being sent to buy vinegar from Riley's in Pottery Road. But my favourite shop was the pie and mash shop and Istill sometimes go to the one in Shepherd's Bush if I am down that way - now live in Harrogate.

As children we all played in the street on summer evenings and during the holidays. Games such as Tin Pan Alley, Run Outs and Peep Behind The Curtain. The lane at the end of the road was also a good play area.

I belonged to The Girls' Life Brigade and remember attending in St. George's Church Hall and going to church parades.
So much happy things to remember - could go on for ever!!
