Browne's Hospital (72317 and 72319, these pages) is one of the most important medieval almshouses in England, dating from 1475 when it was founded by the wool merchant William Browne. The Hospital, which was restored by James Fowler of Louth in 1870-71, includes a common room for the ten poor men (who were accommodated in cubicles), a chapel and an upstairs audit room, which may have doubled as a guildhall. The cloisters and court form a beautiful centrepiece to the complex.

This photo was taken around 1960 as my father (who can be seen in the photo, cleaning the bedroom window) bought number 11, St Paul's Street in 1958 and did not open the barber shop for over a year. I was 5 years old when we moved in and I grew up there with my younger brother. My father kept the barber shop open until he fully retired in 1997 and my parents lived there until 2006, when they moved to a bungalow. The ...see more
This photograph was taken in the year my father was born in the house which is just out of sight at the far left-hand side of the picture (No. 2). I was also born in the same house 33 years later. Most of the buildings shown here are still standing, but the cottage with two windows on the left-hand side had been rebuilt by the time I was born, and since the mid-1960s there has just been a gap there ...see more
