More about this scene
Browne's Hospital (72317 and 72319, these pages) is one of the most important medieval almshouses in England, dating from 1475 when it was founded by the wool merchant William Browne. The Hospital, which was restored by James Fowler of Louth in 1870-71, includes a common room for the ten poor men (who were accommodated in cubicles), a chapel and an upstairs audit room, which may have doubled as a guildhall. The cloisters and court form a beautiful centrepiece to the complex.
