In the right foreground is the entrance to Lewis & Godfrey, a local drapers and department store that specialised in 'Admiralty serges'. When this photograph was taken, the four-story building facing the camera with three gabled windows in the roof was The Royal George Hotel, which looked onto King Street Parade. It closed as a hotel within a few years, and was converted for retail use.
