More about this scene
Sudbury, on the River Stour, was once an important cloth town, and has always had a popular market. Market Hill is lined with elegant Georgian buildings, with St Peter's Church at the top. The artist Thomas Gainsborough was born here in a former 16th-century inn, and he lived and worked here for a number of years. Amongst the shops on the left are the Bazaar of the Misses Parsonson, Robert Joy's carpet warehouse, John Payn, a stationer's, and James Read, a furniture dealer's (now Boots).
