This historic photograph of Thirlmere was taken from Hell How. It shows the last of the original two lakes—Leathe's Water and Wythburn Water—which formerly filled the valley below Helvellyn; they were later joined and became the Thirlmere Reservoir, when Manchester Corporation built the four-mile long reservoir between 1890 and 1892. Conifers, recently planted in the interest of water purity, now cloak the artificial lake with a dense canopy of branches.
