My mother was born in Blaenrhondda at the top of the Rhondda Fawr in 1914 and was one of four sisters but she was the only one to leave the Rhondda at the age of fourteen to go into service in England. My own memories date from 1956 when I went on a family holiday to stay with my mother's carer where she was evacuated in WW2. My mum was there from 1939 to 1943 at least, and she stayed with a Mrs Tancock, a widow, who was probably in her early 60's during WW2. I recall as a young boy of 7 or 8, that I was among a group of friends playing on the siding at the bottom of Margaret Street. We, as friends, found the bomb on the Rhigos Mountain and carried it back to the siding and were throwing stones at the bomb, in an attempt to explode it!.
