More about this scene
Until Barclays Bank was built in 1904, the Methodist church had the only public clock in the village. Many of the Manchester businessmen that settled in Alderley in the mid 19th century came from a Nonconformist background and they often kept up their connections with the city. Miss Moxon would entertain Sunday schools from the Manchester slums in her garden at West Bank, and in the Second World War would always open her house to the evacuees no one else wanted.
