Holidays In The 60s

A Memory of Allendale Town.

We lived in South Shields and used to come to Allendale every year for our summer holidays. Can you imagine it now? A lot people from South Shields used to do the same. We always stayed at the Ashleigh Hotel and once stayed in the cottage in the "Italian Gardens" beside the hotel. I loved it there. There was a large monkey puzzle tree in the front garden and an old fashioned gong was rung at meal times. I used to spend most of my days at the riding school close by.

My Mothers parents ran the hotel in the 60s. We lived in Sunderland at the time and spent some great holidays there too.
We were three brothers born 60, 62 and 65.
Our Gran, Alice Carruthers and Grandad Ted both from South Shields as were our parents ran the place till the early seventies when Ted died suddenly.
We used to be given to job of ringing the gong😂
I remember scrumping in the old orchard up from the cottage where we also stayed at times. There was an italian garden with pond in disrepair up in the woods at the back.
We used to take the lambs out on a leads occasionally from the next dour farm Fairless' I think.
Albert the golf club steward was a favourite and we'd go sledging in the winter on the golf course.
I remember the beds were really high and needing a stool to climb up into them. Ted kept pigeons, pheasant and a couple of peacocks over the time too.
I have such fond memories of my Gran. Such a hard worker and was surely an influence in me taking up catering as a career.
Glad you enjoyed your time time there.
