The sleepy centre of this village, with its picturesque half-timbered cottages and winding lane, was captured from a point near the ruins of the old 14th-century church, which was partly demolished by Sir Lionel Lyde in the late 18th century because it marred his view from new Ayot House.

Many of my family lived in Ayot St Lawrence, pre and post war. Both sets of grandparents lived there. Arthur and Elsie Smith, lived at Forge Cottage and worked at Ayot Cottage & later worked at Abbotshay Farm and lived then at Church Cottage.
