More about this scene

Just down in the dale from Askrigg, on the banks of the River Ure, stands the ancient village of Bainbridge, once the capital of Upper Wensleydale, which was known in the 12th century as the Forest and Manor of Bainbridge. In the background of this picture are the fells of Wensleydale, which still shelter this lovely village.

A Selection of Memories from Bainbridge

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Bainbridge

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My grandfather, Guy Metcalfe, played in Bainbridge Brass Band; nearly half the band were Metcalfes, all related. One of my ancestors (on my mother's side) was the famous hornblower on the village green.
