Memories Of Barking Revisited

A Memory of Barking.

My twin brother and I were born in 1936 in King Edward Road, a stones throw from the old dance hall and the Westbury Arms Pub. We started our education at Westbury Infants and Junior School where the Head Master was a Mr Cox. We eventually moved to St Erkenwal (Music) Road, where we saw the destruction of St Pauls Church on the corner with Ripple Road by a German Rocket during the war. My second eldest brother, Alan, was due to sing in the choir the morning it was bombed, but on this Sunday decided with a friend to give it a miss - lucky fellow.

My brother and I then went to Eastbury Secondary Boys School in Dawson Avenue where, because of our progress at Westbury School, we were placed in the A Class where among our class friends were Teddy Cribb, Paul Wells, Harry Goulding, Albert Rendall, Brian Stagg and many more. My claim to fame during my time at Eastbury was to be voted as School House Captain of Cornwell House, my brother was elected a Prefect of Wilberforce House, there also being houses named Oates and Livingstone.
My memories are still so vivid I could go on and on about my very happy time at Eastbury. -Cliff Smith
