Black Smith

A Memory of Barkingside.

I remember a black smith in Barkingside which used to be next door or near the police station.
We used to watch the old smithy shoeing horses etc. Does any body else remember the old smithy?

Having read your article you have re-kindled my memory. To be honest I had not given the matter a single thought since leaving for South Africa in 1948 until today. But I do now recollect it. Opposite was a small village type school building which I believe had a connection with a larger school some distance away and a school friends father was based at the police station .
hi, yes i do i can remember going there with my pet tortoise and him drilling a hole in its shell at the back so i could not escape !
The old “smithy” was demolished when the new Police Station was built. The Blacksmith was a Mr. Wall who used to live in Cranbourne Gardens. When he retired my parents bought his house and I lived there until the early 1970’s when I moved to Suffolk. I also recall that the decorative railings at the front of the house were also made by him.

I can also recall watching horses being shod,
