Royalance Record Shop

A Memory of Barkingside.

I used to love the Roylance on Saturday nights when he'd clear the shop for dances in the 60's. I had an ancient BSA motorcycle and had to compete with the scooter brigade.

The Royalance Record Shop was a mecca for schoolboys - and I include myself in this. While the records were the main draw, I'm sure many went there because of the wonderful Sonia. I - and all my friends - loved her. I left Barkingside in 1963 and am now an author living on the south coast. It was inevitable that one of my books would eventually feature (a not very well disguised) Royalance. My latest book of short stories (Lights in the Wood) has one called The Record Shop. It is available from ebay, Amazon and the publisher's website (http://jofrapress.co.uk/). Multiple award winning author Peter Lovesey was kind enough to say of my writing - ‘John F Bennett has a rare talent for short-story writing’ and of the book in which The Record Shop appears - ‘John F Bennett is such an acute observer that everything rings true. Strongly recommended.’
