More about this scene

This infamous headland, at 536ft the highest cliff on the south coast, marks the point where the South Downs plunge into the English Channel. This picture was taken prior to the building of the present lighthouse at the cliff foot in 1902, when Belle Tout lighthouse of 1831, built high on the cliffs to the west, served to warn shipping of the danger.
