The substantial stone buildings to be seen in the town here in the Square and also around Salter Street hint at the wealth made by local merchants, who made their money in trade and shipping. Well into the 19th century, ships of up to 40 tons moored in the harbour area, bringing such commodities as salt, fruit, pottery, lead and timber.
