More about this scene
The centre of the village dates from the restoration and repairs begun in 1752 by Lord Crewe's trustees. The village square appears to be sited on the L-shaped outer court of the Abbey, where the barns, storehouses and workshops would once have stood. Slag found under houses on the west side might indicate that the Abbey carried out some lead or silver smelting.
