Buttermere, Haymaking c.1955

More about this scene
In the 1950s, traditional farming practices in the Lakes had not changed much in centuries. The small, isolated farmhouses and dalehead hamlets looked very much as they had done when they were first established in the Middle Ages and before. Horses were still commonly used on the land, and this scene, showing the loading of a hay wagon on the shores of Buttermere, with Honister Crag and Fleetwith Pike prominent in the background, demonstrates a timeless way of life.
