Worms Heath Near Chelsham
A Memory of Chelsham.
I wanted to ask if anyone can recall the gravel pits that existed at Worms Heath near Chelsham, I’m sure that they were operated by a company named Hoveringham, they used orange Foden trucks.
I lived in Selsdon during the 1970’s and went to school at Riddlesdown, some weekends a pal and I would cycle to Worms Heath where other boys rode there motorcycles, all quite illegal but completely out of harms way.
The pits were located approximately a quarter of a mile passed Slines Oak road heading towards Westerham, looking on Google earth today there is absolutely no sign what so ever that they existed and they are not identified on the OS map of that time.
I hope that somebody can reply and confirm there existence, it will prove that I’ve not lost my marbles and imagined the whole thing!
May be you were one of the motorbike riders and can recall the times there?

The pits ran south from this junction bordered by the B269 and Ledgaers Road.
Yes I rode m/bike there around 1974/5.

I now know that the old gravel pits became land fill, hence virtually no sign of their previous existence, I made enquiries with the Bourne Society local history group and received a fantastic reply giving me the full history of operations and ownership..........I was right they did exist!!!
I'm guessing that perhaps the bike you were riding there in 1974/5 might have been British, they were quite plentiful.
I moved away 40 years ago but travel back to see my mother in Selsdon as often as I can, I still keep a few bikes.
