Humprhey The Shoe Menders (Old Jack, Young Jack, Jean And Marjorie)
A Memory of Chesham.
Dear Tim,
I remember the shop very well and used to visit with my Mum, Phyllis Cooley who was the daughter of May Clarke, the sister of Old Jack's wife, i.e. your grandmother. I used to call them Uncle and Aunt but really they were my Mum's cousins and that makes us second cousins. I was born and bred in Chesham but moved to London in 1979 when I got married.
Did Old Uncle Jack used to sit in the window, mending shoes ? But the shop I remember well was after a revamp and Auntie Jean used to sell leather goods (purses, etc). We would always get our shoes repaired there. Mum and Jean could chat for Britain!
Sylvia Hornsby (formerly Cooley)
