Sundays

A Memory of Chingford.

Sundays were memorable, after a proper Sunday roast we would walk from our house at Chingford Hatch, up to the Royal Forest Hotel, then through the woods to the Owl pub, we would sit in the gardens with a drink and a bag of crisps, they had some donkeys in the field next to the garden, which we used to pat, there was also a kettle on a chain in the pub garden with a sign that said 'water 'otter' ... my dad had to explain it to me! Then we walked through the woods along Woodford High Road and down Chingford Lane, stopping at the top of Chingford Lane at a little seafood stall/shop for cockles and shrimps for Sunday tea ... happy memories.

Hello Christine

My memories are just the same.

Only last year after a space of 50 years I took the same walk through the forest from the Royal Forest Hotel to The Owl and the forest was splendid - better even than I remember it. The "water otter" is still there.

Where did you live Robert ? your name rings a bell , i lived on Manor Farm Drive and afterwards we moved to Hoppett road , Christine
Hello Christine

It's good to hear more from you.

I live in Shropshire now but then I lived next to Larkswood - on the far side of the woods from Larkswood swimming pool. School holidays in the summer were spent mostly In the woods and at the swimming pool. Children aren't so free now, sadly for them.

My sister-in-law Barbara lived in Manor Farm Drive.

By the way, I expect you remember that the water otter used to skulk at the bottom of the tank in very dirty water so that you couldn't see it until you pulled the chain out. There was no water in the tank when I was there last year so the fear followed by the laugh when you pulled the chain out has lost its fun. Someone should tell them.

Robert
