Secret Factory At Box Tunnel Corsham

A Memory of Corsham.

This 1904 photo shows both the main line through Box but also the entry to a huge underground military store and factory. When I worked at the MoD in the 1960's I recall that there were 2 lines at one end of the tunnel and 4 at the other. The plans of the extent of the underground works and stores were not fully shown on the plans held at the office; much of it was still classified as "secret" and left to the imagination. No doubt at that time they housed nuclear weapons.
I expect that the history and use of this quarry/store/factory would be fascinating if it could ever be researched and made available. Clearly from this photo there was more going on long before the first world war let alone the 2nd and subsequent years

Comments & Feedback

There are several books describing the history of the Corsham underground bomb storage and factory such as the book by Nick McCamley, Subterranean Britain, Second World War Secret Bunkers. See also, the website
