Cottingham, Hallgate Showing St Mary's Church c.1965

More about this scene

'Hal' or 'Hallgate' - the spelling may change, but it is the same place. The church was built between 1316 and 1416, and originally had five bells. Edward IV, who must have needed some cash, had an inventory done on all the churches in England. It was reckoned that Cottingham only needed four bells, so one was sold off: it raised £25 at auction.

A Selection of Memories from Cottingham

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Cottingham

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

Father-in-law, George Parker, owned the garage at the corner of South Street and King Street. I have photo of building in 1950's and one shortly before it was demolished in about 1968.
