Memories Of Private School Run By Captain And Mrs Young

A Memory of Crawley Down.

I went to this school, which was operated from a substantial detached house on a large site at the junction of Sandy Lane and Hophurst Lane, for one year from September 1961 to July 1962. It was a 'crammer' school of about 40 students only, designed to help pupils through the common entrance examinations. Captain Young was very much the old colonial type, with previous service in Africa, and had obviously formed this as a business on his retirement from the army. He and his wife were both quite elderly, probably in their late 70's and possibly their early 80's at that time. This site has long been redeveloped with a modern residential estate. I would be pleased to hear from any former school mates.
