Crickhowell, Beaufort Street c.1955

More about this scene
Crickhowell is most famous for its grand 17th-century bridge over the Usk, and the nearby 1481ft Table Mountain. On top of Table Mountain is a 2,500-year-old fort (a crug) of Hywel, from which the town derived its name. In later years Crickhowell has become a busy base from which to venture out onto the Brecon Beacons, either on foot or by car. On the right of the photograph is the imposing Clarence Hall. Built in 1892, it was named after the Duke of Clarence, who laid the foundation stone in 1890. It has functioned as a concert hall and meeting-house. The near absence of motor cars makes street scenes such as this seem quite alien to us now.
