Happy Years

A Memory of Crowborough.

I was born in 1946 in my grandparents' house, The Croft in Croft Road, and lived there from the age of 5 after my father died. I went to Whincroft School which I hated and later moved to Hookstead School which was brilliant. My mother had two fashion shops in the village called "Thea Scott" (her name) and "Caroline" (after me!). The headmistress at Hookstead was Miss Latham and my form teacher was Miss Robbins. Miss Robbins was a stickler for good manners, reading and spelling. The Croft is still there although not in its original form. After my grandparents died it was sold to a developer who divided the house into several dwellings and built many others in the garden. We moved to Crest Cottage, opposite the Crest Hotel and when my mother gave up her shops we moved to Hartfield until I got married and moved with my husband to West Sussex. My childhood memories of Crowborough are very happy, My sister and I were lucky enough to have a large garden to play in and used to go out on bike rides together, In 1963 when I learnt to drive the local driving school had use of the roads on the then disused army camp for learners to practice handling a car before going on the road.
