Darlington
A Memory of Darlington.
The view of Post House, Wynd, circa 1965 reminds me of my school days when every school day of the year for seven years I walked up here having bussed from Haughton. Then it was up Duke Street to the grammar school. There was a shop called Northern Surgical Supplies and we used to snigger at the advertisement for Durex in the window. I remember a chocolate shop on the same side as The Dun Cow, which later in life I loved as a pub before it was altered. The chocolate shop was run by an old man whose wares looked very dusty in the window, no such thing as sell by dates then. When I was very young, a one legged man used to do pastel drawings on the road opposite the Dun Cow and people put money in his cap. I have a water colour of the street looking towards the town clock, painted in the 1960s. A very evocative street for me.
